Why is Return to Work support for your people so important to your business?

  • On average, each sickness absence day costs £120 in lost profit

  • Replacing an employee lost to ill-health costs employers over £11000, including recruitment and onboarding costs

  • Employers are reporting rising costs from disputes and tribunals

Why invest in coaching?

A 2025 global survey by PWC, commissioned by the International Coaching Federation, found there to be an average ROI of seven times the cost of employing an executive coach…

What are the implications of prolonged sickness absence?

At some point, a business or organisation (in any given sector) will experience the disruption of  employees with long term sickness absence. They may return to work, only to be signed off again.  As with those who are frequently absent, this can be because they are not adequately supported to return in the first instance. The ongoing consequences to the business are the costs of temporary cover, additional strain on other colleagues and business areas, loss of productivity and loss of revenue.

“Acting quickly allows employers to minimise time off, reduce the risk of long-term ill health, and ensure employees feel genuinely supported and cared for” - Charlotte O’Brien, MetLife UK

Support after maternity and paternity leave…

A quarter of mums are quitting work within a year of maternity leave - and it’s costing UK businesses £650m

Returning to work after maternity leave is one of the most emotionally and professionally demanding transitions in a person’s career. Attrition rates are stark. According to Made for Mums; over 27% of mothers either don’t return or leave within a year, often due to poor support and inadequate return-to-work policies.

Early parenthood is a time of deep bonding, physical and emotional intensity, with for some, significant health challenges. Then, often with a feeling of abruptness, comes the expectation to re-enter the workplace.

Your colleague is potentially leaving their baby in unfamiliar care, whilst stepping back into a fast-paced professional environment. This change can be overwhelming.

Beyond the emotional toll, many face the pressure of re-engaging with evolving teams and managers, new technologies and policies, and the unspoken expectation to “pick up where they left off.”

Coaching provides a vital bridge. It offers space to process the transition, rebuild confidence, and navigate the return with clarity and support.

At Harper Fairweather, we partner with companies to ensure returning parents feel seen, supported, and set up to thrive, not purely survive.

    Workshops for Managers

Return to work after long-term absence, whether sickness, a career break, caring leave or paternity leave, can be challenging for both the individual and the organisation.

Reintegrating someone requires careful consideration to ensure best outcomes for employees and the business.

Your HR department will advise on policy and legal requirements; our coaching workshops compliments that expertise by prompting practical thinking about a returner’s needs and how to meet them.

For example - are there any reasonable adjustments needed under the Equality Act 2010 to remove disadvantages for disabled staff? This alignment builds empathy and a stronger working relationship between manager, team and returner.

Please contact us to discuss how we can help.
